    What is Emotional Intelligence?

    Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand and manage emotions in ourselves and others.

    Why is it important?

    Daniel Goleman, a leader in this field, has identified that successful managers and leaders possess a high percentage of emotional intelligence. By successful we mean those who have;

    • Achieved better financial results,
    • Developed more effective and supportive organisational climates or culture and
    • Achieved higher productivity gains with their workforce.

    Goleman's (1998) findings also indicated that Emotional Intelligence contributes 80 to 90% of the competencies that distinguish outstanding leaders from average leaders.

    What does this mean to S.T.E.P.?

    We will spend the next few weeks discussing supervision and communication. It is important to have some self-awareness to understand how your emotions may impact your day to day communication with either clients/patients, colleagues. In the mentoring program, you are also offering much of yourself in communicating with your mentoring partner.

    Where can I find my EQ?

    Take this brief quiz to find out more about your EQ. Consider how it influences your interactions. Does it help to identify those areas of strength for you? Any areas in which you hope to grow? Share the information with your mentoring partner.  Talk about ways that it could assist you in your day to day life.
