We have learned about different cultural dimensions this month and how members can be inclusive of all populations.  How we communicate and the voice that we use is a large part of our identity. There are times when our gender identity is not congruent with the sex that was assigned at birth. Speech-language pathologists may assist individuals in using a voice in a safe manner that is more congruent with true gender identity. For that individual, a gender congruent voice can impact psychosocial wellbeing as well as personal safety.  Here is a sampling of some articles that share the work of our members in this area.

Mentees: Is this something that you have discussed in your program?  Future audiologists, you are not going to be providing voice modification services; however, you all may be serving this population and increased sensitivity in collecting data and information may be required. Are there any questions that you have?

Mentors: Is this an area of expertise for you? Do we have any voice experts? For both speech-language pathologists and audiologists, have you found that you are modifying any of your clinical practices to ensure that all individuals feel included and welcomed?

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at step@asha.org
