If you can hire people whose passion intersects with the job, they won't require any supervision at all. They will manage themselves better than anyone could ever manage them. Their fire comes from within, not from without. Their motivation is internal, not external.

    Stephen Covey

    Weekly Training: Supervision Case Study

We wanted to spend a little more time talking about supervision.  We hear this scenario frequently in the Office of Multicultural Affairs from the perspectives of the SLP, the supervisor and the client. All asking if it is ethical and within the scope of practice of the SLP.

A hospital hires an SLP to fill a vacancy. The supervisor finds out that the SLP speaks Spanish and wants her to use these skills. The SLP indicates that she would only feel comfortable working with small children birth to 5 and knows how to administer one assessment.

    Peer Discussion
    :

    • What are your thoughts? Any concerns?
    • What if I changed the scenario to an audiologist? Does that impact your response?
    • What resources help you come to your conclusion?
