ASHA Career Portal - A Helpful Gateway to Career Development and Professional Growth

As you undoubtedly know, job growth in the professions of both audiology and speech-language pathology is increasing faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This growth provides many opportunities (and also some challenges!) for audiologists and speech-language pathologists as they start, grow, or transition in their careers. To more fully support you as you pursue your career goals, ASHA has expanded its career development resources with the launch of the ASHA Career Portal. This new member resource is designed to provide  outstanding value for those looking to build and enhance their careers.

Overview: What Is the ASHA Career Portal?

The goal of the Career Portal, which launched in September 2018, is to provide valuable content and help members identify and develop the skills they need beyond their clinical knowledge. It's designed to provide assistance to members at each and every step of their career journey.

    What Does It Offer?

    The Career Portal provides:

    • content that acknowledges your career stages-getting started, finding a job, on the job, leadership and supervision, and private practice-so that you can self-select the information that is appropriate for your needs,
    • job postings that allow you to find opportunities near you, and
    • an enriched web experience that allows you to:

No matter your career stage, the Career Portal has resources for you. The Career Portal was created with the input of numerous ASHA members and staff who participated in focus groups, phone interviews, and member user research to inform the content and the topics to include. It was through this collaboration that we were able to create something truly special that we hope will provide you with vital information to help you not only survive, but excel.

    Success So Far

Since the site launched, there have been more than 32,000 site visitors. The most popular articles are Job Outlooks, Determining Salary, and Resume Writing Strategies, and there are nearly 90 employers who have postings on the job board.

    What's Coming in 2019?

The Career Portal will release new content on a bimonthly basis. Upcoming articles include:

    • Negotiating Your Offer
    • Asking the Hard Questions in Interviews
    • Transitioning Work Settings
    • Professional Advocacy
    • How to Leave a Job
    • Tips for Entering Supervision
    • Creating a Marketing Plan
Beyond articles, a new social media series, "How I Got the Job," will be launched this summer to highlight stories and tips from members in various work settings.

Another feature I think you will really like is that the Career Portal also offers hands-on support from ASHA National Office staff and at the Career Fair at the ASHA Convention. The Career Portal Lounge at Convention offers free resume review with a career coach, features mini-workshops, and hosts the Resume Star program with employers.

I hope you will take a few minutes in your busy day to visit the Career Portal, read content posted on ASHA's LinkedIn, or follow the Portal on Twitter for tips, resources, and job opportunities. The perfect tip (or job!) might just be waiting for you to click on it, propelling  you forward in a positive and productive direction.
