Hello All,,
Tiffany White, THANK YOU SO MUCH, for posting about the 'Joint NEA AFT Town Hall: Dismantling of the US Department of Education'. Your post informed me about this and I was able to share with other NEA Members that are also strong advocates. I wanted to share the excellent resources that were shared at this meeting, so that folks can share them out with their own educational staff.
1) This coming Wednesday, March 19th, NEA is recommending that as many schools as possible host or support a "Walk In" (Walk-ins are a type of collective action that can be used to show the power of the people who make our public schools and communities possible.) Read more about it here, including how to host/support one near you: March 19 Participant Toolkit | NEA
2) Federal Funding Guide: Federal Funding for Selected Programs by State and Program: Federal Funds for IDEA, Title 1, Head Start, Pell Grant are broken down by individual state AND individual school district: Federal Education Funding for Selected Programs by State and Program | NEA
3) Write to Congress to tell them to push back and stop the destruction of the Department of Education: User Friendly Resource to find/write your Congressmen/Congresswomen: Stop the Destruction of the Department of Education | NEA
There were a series of speakers, that joined NEA President Becky Pringle and AFT President Randi Weingarten. These speakers were from different avenues that informed us how they are pushing back against the dismantling of the Dept of Education, including Gov. JB Pritzler of Illinois, Ailen Arreaza of North Carolina's non-profit chapter of 'ParentsTogether', Deb Gesualdo of Malden, Massachusetts (Music Educator, local union President), Angela Bonilla of the Portland (Oregon) Association of Teachers, NY State Attorney General Letitia James, and I believe a Congresswoman from Connecticut (name?) who really summed it up when she said "I need you all to be the wind behind my sails" as she talked about legislative push-back.
Please spread the word about these valuable resources! We are the educators on the front line! Let's build up our army!
Take Care!
