  • 1.  Making Tough/Unpopular Decisions

There have been times when as the leader of a group/organization that I had to make a tough decision that I felt was best for the group/organization, knowing it would be an unpopular decision with some of the membership. What process do you utilize or considerations do you make when confronted with tough decisions as a leader?

My experience has been to be as transparent as possible ( or as situation permits) in explaining why the decision was made the way it was. Also, those experiences really helped me learn not to take attacks personal. Reflecting on the behavior of those around me helped me see their perspective (e.g., they did not understand, felt a loss of power) and thus I learned to remain objective. Tough decisions are just that tough, but good leaders are decisive. There is a book crucial conversations that addresses communicating about tough topics. It is a good and easy read.

Good point about learning not to take things personally and seeing things from individuals' perspectives Kelly. Definitely a lesson I had to learn, and am still learning!

    Byron,
You ask a great question! I think the best way to handle this, is, first to get input from your team, if possible, so you can hear their ideas. If it is a decision that you have to make by yourself, then make sure you let the group know your reasoning and thought process for making the decision you did. Address their questions honestly and work with those who are struggling with the decision.

Remember that we cannot make everyone happy! As leaders we all need to make tough decisions and some may not be popular. It is important that you don't take negative responses personally!
