  • 1.  Seek out leadership opportunities (and some ideas of how to do that)

    As we wrap up the month of November, in which many of us have attempted to list things that we are thankful for, I have one more "thankful for" item that I want to share with our Leadership Academy community. 

     

    In the October (2019) issue of Perspectives (SIG 4:  Fluency and Fluency Disorders), Dr. Tommie Robinson (@Tommie Robinson) wrote a wonderful article outlining ways that clinicians working with stuttering and other fluency disorders can engage in leadership activities.  He highlights the importance of leadership and its connection to clinical management.  I believe that his ideas are applicable to all of us, no matter the work setting or type of communication disorders that we see. 

     

    Dr. Robinson lists several ways that we can be leaders in our work settings.  A few of these are: become the specialist in your clinical setting, conduct presentations and/or grand rounds, and write public service announcements.  Check out the article (citation below) for details and many more ideas. 

     

    The bottom line:  You don't need a title to be a leader (Lolly Daskal; President and CEO, Lead From Within).  As Dr. Robinson outlines in his article, leadership can come in many forms – If you are seeking to be a "leader", start in your work place.  Choose a task or a function and just do it.  AND feel free to share it here on the ASHA Leadership Academy Community.

    Hold on the Robinson's article. We can incorporate some of his ideas on leadership progression in our short course.
