The ASHA Committee on Leadership Cultivation (CLC) is interested in hearing from you about leadership development needs of ASHA Early Career Professionals (ECPs). ASHA ECPs are those who have been professionals for 5 or fewer years, and generally speaking they are younger than age 30 (of course there are ECPs who have joined the ranks of SLP and Audiology at older ages). Adults under 30 years of age are younger Millennials (born from 1981-1996) and older members of Generation Z (born in 1997 and later). These members of Gen Z and "cusp" Millennials have grown up in tumultuous times. Formative events for them include living in a digital, internet-connected world since birth, the post-9/11 era, the 2008 financial crisis, social and political turmoil, the COVID pandemic, and now the Ukraine war. Characteristics of Gen Z include being "digital natives", the most racially and ethnically diverse generation in the U.S. so far, and being socially and politically progressive with a belief that government should solve societal problems. Generation Z members report relatively higher levels of anxiety and depression and are more likely to seek help for mental wellness than previous generations felt comfortable doing. In the workplace, they are reported to be collaborative, desire open dialogue including with those in authority, prefer hybrid choices for communications, and seek flexibility in order to maintain a work-life balance that is important to them.

Based upon the general characteristics described above, what roles do you think ECPs want to assume in professional organizations they belong to (ASHA, state associations, related professional organizations) during their careers?

What knowledge and skills do you think ASHA ECPs need to successfully move into management and leadership roles in their workplaces and professional organizations?

How do you think ECPs want leadership development information and training to be delivered to them?

We are looking forward to your responses,

    Alison Lemke, Chair, CLC
