Favorite Leadership Resources

In following the posts on this Discussion, I have seen so much rich conversation and sharing of information about leadership skills, pathways to leadership, mentoring, networking, personal experiences, and available resources developed by ASHA's AWARD Winning Team. It is exciting to read about what we, ourselves, are thinking, doing, and planning.  I am sure that many of you who are participating in the discussion have read or listened to valuable information about leadership from outside our field.  I would like to know what resources (books, websites, podcasts, authors) you have found to be helpful in leadership development.   I hope you will share those you have found to be valuable.

This is a great question and a wonderful idea to share resources.  There are many books on leadership topics that I like.  In addition, the Smartbrief newsletter about leadership is very informative.   Anyone can subscribe to the newsletter at leadership@smartbrief.com
I am also re reading Crucial Conversations by Kerry Patterson, Al Switzler, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan.      I have learned many helpful ideas in having honest and productive conversations with others and it has also helped me  with providing constructive feedback to student clinicians.
I look forward to hearing the suggestions of others!

I have many favorites in this category, but one that has had a lasting effect on me is Patrick Lencioni (https://www.tablegroup.com/ ).  He writes and speaks about leadership and organizational health which I believe go together.  Specifically, his book, The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team (https://www.tablegroup.com/books/dysfunctions ), changed the way I viewed leading a team (and being on a team).  Although my team wasn't dysfunctional, per se, I learned a lot about how to improve and strengthen my team.  To this day, I use his model when thinking about the teams that I work on and that I am asked to give guidance to for improvement.

I look forward to reading other responses and learning about new resources.

Thank you for sharing.  I found this article very helpful as well.  It was a quick read, but provided valuable points.  I am going to work on this all of my team, not just those who I have no authority over.

Tagging on to the request for leadership resources, does anyone have a recommendation for a book on how to run meetings?

I like this question.  What a challenge it can be  to run a good meeting!  Having run hundreds of meetings, I was surprised at myself when I could not come up with a favorite resource aside from good old Robert's Rules of Order.  I googled "running a good meeting" and thought the simple lists of points that came up were useful and covered the basic.-- although I find that it is not always so easy to stick to the plan and still assure that the group members have the opportunity to learn and contribute!   When a decision needs to be made, and there is no consensus, I find it helpful to go back to "Robert" even for informal meetings that are not strictly built around that model..

I recently purchased Michael Hyatt's No Fail Meetings - only through a couple chapters and already have ideas about how to change things up. Here's the website: https://nofailmeetings.com/

Just one more idea to add!  Kerry Mandulak, Pacific University

When it comes to leadership there are many resources, but there are two I  found to be especially enlightening. They helped me think about leadership in a slightly different way especially since they are lessons from two men who lived in very different eras and faced very different challenges.
Mandela's Way by R. Stengel is about Nelson Mandela's life and how his leadership philosophy evolved during the various phases of his life. Lincoln on Leadership by D. Phillips is an interesting retelling of how President Lincoln exercised leadership strategies that made allies of enemies and allowed him to bring opponents to his side. Both books provide valuable and interesting lessons on leadership.

Toastmasters International has a new educational program called Pathways. It provides online content and a variety of opportunites to practice leadership skills - and communications skills - inside and outside of a Toastmasters club. Additionally, mentorship is available and feedback is provided. Numersous leadership and communication projects can be completed in the Toastmasters club or district, but could also be completed in the form of projects or events you organize and lead in your work setting or within another organization. It is a self-paced program that you learn by hands-on participation, in addition to the guidance provided through the online program and the experienced Toastmasters in your local club. It's even a great opportunity to put into practice all of the leadership (mentoring and coaching) principles and ideas you get from other books and speakers, etc. I am happy to answer your questions about Toastmasters, or you can check out the Toastmasters International website at Toastmasters.org.

I just read this article regarding leadership without authority ("getting others to willingly cooperate and engage, rather than following directives because you're the boss..").  I thought it might be of interest in this discussion about leadership resources:  https://www.theladders.com/career-advice/3-crucial-skills-for-leading-without-authority

I believe that these skills will be of interest to all of us who want to build our leadership skills b/c even if we are the "boss" in one setting, we can and need to provide leadership in situations where we are NOT the boss.  And as the article says, "And, by the way, if you are the boss, the rules have changed for you too."

    Enjoy!

Thank you for sharing this article Donna. I love that the article points out the importance of empathetic listening. I think the most difficult of the 3 recommendations for me is the recommendation for "positive emotions." If I'm honest, there are some times (okay...maybe days) when I'm not feeling positive and I'm certain I do not do a great job exuding positive emotions during those times. Dr. Goman noted that negative and positive energy can be "highly infectious." This article was a great reminder to keep your head up, stay the course, and stay positive.

I enjoyed reading the article as well - I also believe that these points are critical to leading in our classrooms as faculty.  I strive to show my students how to work as a team, to take & give constructive criticism, have empathy for others, and yes, be a leader.

Karen – I would definitely agree with you that this message applies in the classroom (and in clinical education situation as well).  I really think the message is applicable across so many areas, both professionally and personally (parenting for example ).
