My two favorite quotations about leadership are: "Lead, follow, or get out of the way" by Ted Turner and "Leadership is making others better as a result of your presence, and making sure that impact lasts in your absence" by Sheryl Sanberg.

Mine is actually a Bible verse. "I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me".

There is no qualifier on the 'all' which means nothing is impossible! Whatever I want to do, no matter how challenging it may seem, I can do anything!

Seles - what a GREAT post.  I have loved reading the responses.  It has been hard for me to narrow down my favorite leadership quote but here goes.  I think that "vision" is important in leadership.  So two of my favorite leadership thoughts about vision are these:

Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others –Jonathan Swift (1667-1745)

Where there is no vision, the people perish – Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

In light of what is going on in our country today, i think leadership begins with honesty.....so this is one of my favorites (which also kind of falls in line with concepts related to EBP).

In response to one of his fellow senators that he did not agree with, Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, "Sir you are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts".

John, that was an incredible quote...in fact, profound for leadership at every level and it made me recall the opportunity I had to hear Maya Angelou speak.

I've tried to apply this quote about creativity and its relationship to leadership: "You can't use up creativity, the more you use, the more you have."

Hi Davetrina! I'm glad you started this thread. It has been fun to see what words keep everyone motivated. My favorite quote is by Bob Goff. It never hurts to be reminded that the successes of others don't take away from our own personal paths.

Good morning! I have a few, but two that I think apply to my work as an SLP.. "Do one thing every day that scares you" which through a Google search I've learned isn't really from Eleanor Roosevelt but possibly from Mary Schmich.. and "The storyteller makes no choice, soon you will not hear his voice. His job is to shed light, not to master" by the lyricist Robert Hunter.

Wow...great post! One of my favorite quotes that I draw on when I am facing (professional) adversity where I don't think I'll succeed. The quote came from on of my undergrad professors in ROTC who was an Army Pilot. I didn't know if I could do it or if I would be "good enough" to get in and be a pilot. He said, "Think about it....there have been thousands of aviators who went through flight school already. Are they any better than you? Are they smarter than you? If they did it then you can do it!"
That has stuck with me for almost 20 years now. I am going to be honest and vulnerable now.....but sometimes I go through some periods of "impostor syndrome." And I think back on what professor said, "If they did it...."

And a second quote, of sorts, that I'll share is not something that I would reflect on professionally, but personally. Friends (outside of work or fostering those true friendships that began at word) are extremely important to my overall well-being (there's a story behind the quote but I'll spare the details). But it comes from my favorite band, OAR, and their song "I Feel Home."

"There are few things pure in this world anymore,

And home is one of the few.........

    I feel home,
When I see the faces that remember my own.
    I feel home,
When I'm chillin outside with the people I know.
    I feel home,
And that's just what I feel.
    Home is reality,
And all I need is something real."

David, thank you for sharing the quote from your UG professor -- I believe we all suffer from "impostor syndrome" -- even to this day after a long career, I worry someone will discover I really don't know as much as they think I know! Thanks also for sharing the lyrics to OAR's "I Feel Home." I listened to it online. What a meaningful song! Your comment about friends at work being important to our overall well-being is spot-on and also perhaps is not given credit for the critical role it does play in our happiness factor. Research shows that happiness leads to success. Further research shows that although genetics accounts for about 50% of our happiness, 40% is due to variables that we determine -- this includes things we do, which can include fostering a feeling of home with colleagues (the remaining 10% is due to circumstances). The happiness link to leadership is that leaders are at their best when they are balanced, relaxed, and happy. Thanks so much for sharing these wise nuggets, David!
