Building Leadership Skills

Hi. My name is Gabrielle Haliburton and I am a speech therapist. I earned my clinical doctorate and masters from Nova Southeastern University. For the past twelve years, I have primarily worked with children in grades K-12. I have also provided early intervention services to families whose children are birth to three years of age.

My passion is teaching and mentoring. So I am always striving to better myself through education and networking. However, my leadership skills are evolving as I'm in the process of transitioning from providing speech services in the schools to providing services online, in homes, and in medical facilities. So here's my question...how have you built your own leadership skills? Please share one way (or more if you like) that you have built your leadership skills.

    Hi Gabrielle,
I think one of the first steps in building your leadership skills would be to network. Find professionals who taken the path you are about to embark on, talk to them, ask them for advice, share with them. Think about where you want to be with your leadership skills over the next year, two years, five years. Talk to those who have been there, but also talk with those who are walking the same path in order to build a network of folks like you.

You mentioned that you are moving into telepractice. That is an exciting move and I would be happy to talk with you about that as it is a passion for me!

Hi Melissa. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the advice. I would love to talk more about telepractice/teletherapy as I am new to this area of speech.

    Hi Gabrielle,
Great question. I've built my leadership skills through continuing education resources, picking the brains of my mentors, and learning to "do it afraid." Learning to "do it afraid" has helped me escape many of my barrier mantras of "I'm not ready," "What if I fail," "Am I good enough" etc. Building my leadership skills in and out of my comfort zone and learning to make new mistakes have been monumental in my development.

Thanks for sharing! I'm just starting to get outside of my comfort zone but I agree with you in regards to networking and continuing education.

If I had to share just one thing that I do to work on my leadership skills (independently), I would say that I read lots of material about leadership.  I read books about leadership, articles that pop up in my social media feeds (LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, etc), and anything a I see about leadership in popular media.

The best thing I have done so far to develop my leadership skills is participate but in ASHA's leadership development program. I highly encourage you to apply if you want to develop your leadership skills!

However, I'll leave you with something tangible...the ASHA leader published "Step up your work game" by Kevin Nourse in 2014. I also read HBR's "10 Must Reads on Emotional Intelligence". It features "What makes a Leader?". And lastly, practicing new skills really helps, even in low pressure settings, like via volunteer work.

Thanks for the information Keila. I've recently taken on a more leadership role at church just helping out. It's really helping me understand myself and others without the added pressure of being in charge of something really big.

    Thanks!

Thanks for sharing Keila. Although I am not sure I would be able to complete the LDP at this time, I will definitely check out the books that you recommended.

Thanks for sharing Donna! This is one area that I need to improve as I have not read books on leadership lately. However I do know that a past discussion/topic included favorite leadership resources so I will definitely review those posts.

I want to piggy-back off of Donna's comments about ingesting materials about leadership. My time has been more engulfed in work and personal life, which meant that reading/hobbies have started to decline, unfortunately. However, I have "discovered" audio books that I can listen to driving to work, going on a walk, or whatever. Regarding leadership, I've listened to two audio books over the past year in addition to some of my other interests.
But, with audio books, I can do "something" to help improve myself (or relax) that doesn't take time from family, work, or personal time.
