I had the opportunity to hear Donna talk about micro-volunteering opportunities. My experience has been to be as transparent as possible ( or as situation permits) in explaining why the decision was made the way it was. You nailed it with relationship building. That and communication skills, specifically do not avoid what are termed "crucial conversations", those that may be difficulty but absolutely necessary. I think direct reports crave information as a source of security and power thus clear and consistent communication ...
